BLOOMSBURYWEST
A High-Altitude Retreat
A house of one’s own on a quiet street in the mountain hamlet of Silver Cliff, Colorado, elevation 7,980 feet, far from the madding crowds.
A place to read, write, think, make art, study, contemplate the nature of the object of your contemplation. One-bedroom, former miner’s cabin, all conveniences, “self-catering,” as the British say, though within one block is the best pizza place in a sixty-mile circumferance and a homey small hotel restaurant. Supermarket, health food store, gym and indoor pool, plus two gas stations within one mile.
When you need a break from all that creating, drive to extraordinary hiking in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, whose 14,000 foot peaks you can see out the living room and bedroom windows. Or drive north to the Arkansas River for whitewater rafting. Golf course and tennis courts within five minutes’ drive.
Fly into Denver International Airport and rent a car for the 3-hour drive, or into the charming Colorado Springs Airport, only 2 hours from BloomsburyWest. When you need a “city” fix, you can choose between Denver, Colorado Springs, or, closer to Silver Cliff, Salida, a river city burgeoning with art; Canon City, an old Main Street-centered town with a fascinating prison museum; Pueblo, with two colleges and an excellent art center and children’s museum; Florence, home of the Supermax Federal Prison and a plethora of antique stores.
Walking or biking, you will find the sister town of Westcliffe, with its excellent wi-fi café, an outrageously terrific library, a few restaurants, a bakery, movie theater, which, in summertime, hosts concerts and plays, craft shops, a bar, all with a staggering view of the Sangre de Cristos, and summer thunderstorms that clear in time for sunset.

BloomsburyWest is for artists and writers to experience beauty and clarity where its founder, Annie Dawid, writer and artist, has discovered a world in which the creative impulse, once fostered, blossoms.
If you need time away to read, write, think and create, this small home is for you. Spouses, partners and a child might accompany you but spend the days elsewhere, as the house is only 600 square feet, the bedroom containing a log bunk bed, full mattress below and twin above. Aesthetically furnished but designed for comfort, a home for artists and writers complete with 1915 upright Baldwin to play.

BloomsburyWest has no television or internet access. You can use the
public library's computers or bring a laptop to Candy's Wi-Fi Cafe or
Poag Mahone's Pub to get on the web. According to guests, it's more
relaxing to be away from the internet for a true retreat.
BloomsburyWest does not have a microwave but is otherwise a lovely kitchen for cooking whatever you like. There is no outdoor grill, but you can easily grill in the brand new oven.
Annie Dawid, author of YORK FERRY: A NOVEL, LILY IN THE DESERT: STORIES and the forthcoming AND DARKNESS WAS UNDER HIS FEET: STORIES OF A FAMILY is available for individual tutorials in fiction and essay writing. See www.anniedawid.com.
